Continuum Chicago · Legacy Stewardship

The Main Character Weekend

Four days in Chicago, composed entirely around you.

Friday to Monday. One life. The city as your set. Most people receive their finest hour after they are gone. We moved it forward.

The Idea

You, as the main character.

You are the one who makes the reservation, gives the toast, remembers the birthday, drives to the airport at five in the morning. You have been a supporting character in a hundred other people's big days. The Main Character Weekend turns that around: a long weekend in Chicago, built from the particulars of your own story and surrounded by the people who supplied them. The rooms of your life, rebuilt and walkable. The dishes nobody has made right in decades, made right. The things usually saved for the eulogy, said out loud, to your face.

It is not a party and it is not a retrospective. It is a work of stewardship, composed to one person, performed once, in the city we love.

The Practice · Mise en Vie

How a life becomes a weekend.

Movement I

The Quiet Research

It begins with conversation, not a questionnaire. Our curators sit with the person planning the weekend, and then, discreetly, with the people who know you from every angle: family, oldest friends, the colleague, the neighbor, the bartender on Division who knows your order. Nobody is asked for a tribute. They are asked for particulars. The song that was always on. The exact color of the kitchen on Sunday mornings.

Movement II

The Test Kitchenthe real secret

Nothing reaches your weekend untested. A chef calls it mise en place; we call our version Mise en Vie. The recipe is cooked, tasted against living memory, and cooked again until the person who remembers it goes quiet. The record is found on the right format. The scent is blended and re-blended. Every ingredient that embodies you is rehearsed until it is not a reference to your life but a piece of it.

Movement III

The Archive

Everything gathered in the research and captured across the four days is composed into a private archive: the speeches, the letters, the recipes as tested, the playlist, the score of the weekend. Held under vaulted, access-controlled retention for exactly as long as your family wishes, and not a day longer. Discretion is not a courtesy here. It is the craft.

The Long Weekend

Friday to Monday in Chicago

Every weekend is composed to its person. The bones stay the same.

FridayThe Threshold

You are received.

A private car at your door or the curb at O'Hare, with your calendar cleared and your bag already packed. The long way in, along the river as the sun turns the towers on Wacker to honey. A prepared room above the lake: your flowers, your record, your book marked at the page you left off. A small dinner somewhere that matters to your story. No speeches yet. Nothing is asked of you.

SaturdayThe City Is Your Set

You walk through your own story.

Morning on the lakefront, with an old friend waiting to run the last mile. Then the rooms of your life, rebuilt and walkable: a childhood kitchen in a Fulton Market loft, a first classroom, a choir loft, a rooftop crew from 1994. The afternoon under glass, somewhere older than all of us, like the great conservatory in Garfield Park. Then a Chicago night chosen by the people who know you best: a jazz room, a house music floor, a blues bar, a night game under the lights.

SundayThe Long Table

The words usually saved for later.

Everyone from every chapter, gathered at one long table for the first time. Every course is a chapter of your life, tested until it tastes exactly right. Between the courses, your people stand and say the particular things, the ones usually saved for the eulogy, out loud, to your face. Then the table becomes a party, and the party goes late.

MondayThe Fourth Morning

You leave with the high-water mark on you.

A drive south along the lake before dawn to watch the sun come up over Lake Michigan from the limestone at the Point, or wherever your morning belongs. Breakfast, then a quiet hour in which the Archive is placed in your hands. Then home, to the same streets and the same calendar. Nothing has changed. Everything has.

A Long Weekend in Chicago

Main Character follows one guest of honor through a Continuum Chicago long weekend: the quiet research that starts without them, the test kitchen they never see, a Friday arrival along the river, a Saturday spent inside the rooms of a life, a Sunday at The Long Table, and a Monday sunrise over Lake Michigan. Read it before you book a conversation. It will tell you what the weekend feels like better than any brochure.

The Podcast

The Guest of Honor

Every guest on this show has heard their eulogy, and lived to tell you about it.

Past main characters, and sometimes the families who conspired with us, sit down and walk through their weekend in Chicago: what they suspected, what undid them, and what it does to a person to hear it all while their heart is still keeping time.

I

First episodes are in the test kitchen.

Season One arrives soon. New conversations will appear here and on the usual platforms.

Begin

Tell us about the person.

Every weekend begins with a single, unhurried conversation. Whether it is for you, or for someone whose weekend you would like to set in motion quietly, write to us. Three to six months ahead is ideal; we can move faster when a family needs us to.

Discretion from the first note. If the weekend is a surprise, it stays one.
